Catered Crop Catered Crop Recipes for and by our paper craft community Home About card grazing Contact For instance, the bicycle is the most efficient machine ever created: Converting calories into gas, a bicycle gets the equivalent of three thousand miles per gallon. ~Bill Strickland Yay! It’s time for Libby Hickson’s Tour de Craft, Libby’s annual craft homage to the Tour de France (the 21-stage, 3,660 km bicycle race). Joining Libby and her stamp-happy, bicycle-bonkers friends to honor the Tour makes me happy as a down hill racer! Have you noticed the Tour riders grabbing snacks out of their sweaty back pockets in the middle of the race? I decided to go a little off the map with a look back to the snack of champions – GORP. Remember GORP? It was popular in the 1970’s with hikers because it was lightweight, easy to store, and nutritious and, well, because powerbars weren’t on the scene yet. I used to pack GORP in my bike bag for quick fuel between food stops. That combination of salty and crunchy, sweet and chewy is just magical. Although GORP is short for granola, oats, raisins, and peanuts, let’s be honest, granola and oats sounds like something you’d feed your horse. I make mine with nuts, dried fruits, sunflower seeds, pretzels, and most importantly, M&Ms. The carbohydrates in the dried fruit give a quick energy boost while the fat and protein in the nuts provide sustained energy. The M&Ms are just tasty! And, like their ad says, M&Ms melt in your mouth, not in your bike bag. For giggles and grins (and, hey, maybe a fun party favor), I packed my GORP today in decorated pillow boxes and plastic push pop containers. They’re stinkin’ cute and yummy, right? tips and techniques I found these plastic push pop containers in a fun store in Austin, Texas: Make it Sweet. Just Google “push pop containers” to find a retailer or click on the link below. Filling, decorating and eating from them is just so much fun! For some other ideas for these containers here’s a great article from the fabulous Tip Junkie: 14 Amazing Push Pop Treats {recipes}. What you put in your GORP is really just a matter of personal preference. Here are some ideas: nuts: almonds, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans dried fruit: raisins, cranberries, banana chips breakfast cereal: Chex, Grape Nuts, Cheerios, granola, rolled oats seeds: pumpkin or pepita, sunflower, sesame pretzels, popcorn, Goldfish crackers shredded coconut yogurt chips M&Ms or other candy-coated chocolate that won’t melt in the sun Besides the groceries of nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and candy, here are the rest of the ingredients to my GORP tribute. InLinkz.com That’s all for me. Thank you, Libby, for letting me roll with you! As I reviewed my blog posts of 2014 it was pretty obvious that I spent more time outside my craft studio than inside it. Since retiring from inspecting and investigating nursing homes last February, I’ve been able to say yes to amazing adventures like traveling to New York, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Indiana, and New Mexico; taking cooking, photography and sewing classes; volunteering; and helping my daughter Caitlin remodel her first home and studio. 2014 was also my inaugural year as the manager of Caitlin’s first company, Feb10 Design. Caitlin had closed Feb10 to keep up with the growth of Little Low, but Feb10 is perfect for me. Sharing my daughter’s designs all around the globe gives me incredible pride and joy. It’s like posting your child’s art on the refrigerator – 0n Steroids! Feb10 is just big enough to supplement my retirement income and small enough to still have more fun than anyone should be allowed. My husband and our dogs, Olive and Mailey, have settled into a routine that’s thankfully rarely routine. So . . . here’s a review of my favorites from my meager pickings of crafty creations. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed making them. If you click on any of the pictures, it will take you to the original post for all the details and, of course, my profound words of wit and wisdom. I retired from working for the State of Texas just eight days after posting this card – but I’m Still a Spring Chicken! What can I say? I love bunnies, big hearts and the chance to hang out with the gang from Your Next Stamp. I quack myself up sometimes. This little tag was so much fun mostly because of what was inside the boxes – custom 3-D View-Master slides for my husband’s family. This was dedicated to the butter to my bread, the breath to my life, and the ying to my yang – magnificant Mr. Catered Crop. Sometimes I just go a little crazy. I mean, really?! Could I fit anything more into this wild and crazy card? It was a metaphor for my life so I went a little nuts. I was happily transported back to my mother-in-law’s house and the 1980s when I made this card. We spent a lot of girl time cross stitching together. I love stitching on cards and I’m so tickled that cross stitching and embroidery are having a resurgence. I couldn’t attend the fall-themed baby shower of a sweet friend, so I sent lots of booties. And, finally, this is a favorite because it helped promote the Caring Heart Card Drive. Thanks to Vera Yates’ campaign I was able to hand over beautiful handmade cards to Friends for Life and Meals on Wheels for 1,800 of their Central Texas clients. They were overjoyed. Most importantly, I have loved all your sweet comments. Thank you for being so wonderfully supportive of all my silliness!
